How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

by Scott Hughes

—with thanks to Stanley Kubrick

Heaven hit the ground.
It did. It rammed
right down
into the goddamned
earth. Gold streets smacked
asphalt. Rivers churned
to wine, to blood. Cracked
ivory burned.
Pearl
gates sank home,
shrouded by curls
of silt and loam.
You turned to me and said, “It’s through.”
“Nah,” I said. “It ain’t nothin’ new.”
